Hot Weather Hiking
Summer is finally here and you’re ready to enjoy the great outdoors to the fullest. With summer also come hot and humid temperatures with its apparent risks. Knowing these risks could make your day an enjoyable one or a potentially dangerous excursion. So you are asking yourself what do I need to know and how do I plan a hot day on the trails. The following is a step by step guide to ensure a safe and enjoyable hike.
Step 1
Plan your hike. Make sure you have the necessary essential safety gear in your backpack. This would include a first aid kit, map or gps, sunscreen, insect repellent, pocket knife, flashlight, water proof matches, cell phone, extra water, sports drink and some snacks. The amount you bring will of course depend on the length of your hike and the difficulty. You should never hike alone for safety purposes. Tell family or friends of your hike details which would include start location, start time and end time.
Step 2
Hydrate yourself. Make sure you are properly hydrated before and during your hike. This would include drinking plenty of water and a sports drink of your choice, orange juice or any other fruit juice is also a good choice. Caution if you have indulged in alcoholic beverages the night before, you might want to give yourself some extra time for hydrating yourself and recovery as you body is already dehydrated.
Step 3
Dress for the conditions. Wear light coloured . lightweight clothing helps prevent dehydration and protects the skin from sun exposure. Use products made from breathable synthetic materials Wear sunscreen of a spf45 or higher and sunglasses if the trail is free of shade.
Step 4
Take some light snacks for the trip. These could include dried nuts and fruit or any kind of granola or power bar. Slightly salted snacks will help replace the salt you may lose from sweating.
Step 5
Take your time. Take frequent breaks to hydrate and to keep fatigue under control. Listen to your body and know your body’s limits.
Step 6
Have fun!

Wilderness Tips
Embarking on a wilderness adventure or camping trip can be an exciting experience, however it is important to remember to pack adequate safety supplies in case of an emergency. Outdoor camping trips can always present an unforeseen event, and being prepared with camping first aid kits and emergency preparedness kits is an essential task of planning your outdoor adventure.
You can choose from a variety of camping and wilderness first aid kits, filtering by price, size and your specific needs. For example, a basic camping first aid kit for 1-2 people may include basic supplies such as gauze, antibacterial powder, and band-aids. However, an emergency preparedness kit for the same quantity will encompass emergency snack bars with a high calorie content, medical equipment, water, and radio services. These types of emergency preparedness kits include items that are essential for survival in a remote place, with no access to food or water. Each year, hikers and campers find themselves lost in the woods without proper survival supplies to aid in food, weather and safety issues. An emergency preparedness kit or camping first aid kit would allow you to be prepared for any emergency that might come your way during camping.
Before you go camping or backpacking, there are some important backpacking tips that you should take into consideration. One of the most important backpacking tips is to always have a plan or navigational tool when embarking on a hike. If you are in a dense or wooded area, it is very easy to lose your way and create a dangerous situation for yourself. Remember to adequately map your route, bring a compass or other navigational device, and try not to wander into uncharted territory.
Other backpacking tips include bringing the right amount of water, food and first aid kits necessary for the entire duration of your trip, if not more. Running out of any supplies when in a remote camping area can be harmful, and packing the right amount is crucial if an emergency arises.
Our online storefront offers a wide variety of camping first aid kits and emergency preparedness kits for campers and avid hikers. You may navigate depending on number of people in your party, as well as individual specialty items you may be looking for. Before embarking on your trip, create a list of everything you think might be needed making sure to take every person in your party into account.
